The New York Times Magazine recently published an article where "a woman noticed a strange odor coming from her husband. It turned out to be early Parkinson's diease." This leads to the question what is the connection between smell and disease? How can someone detect a disease simply through the sense of smell? Students can study this through inquiry based learning for high school chemistry. First, students examine the chemistry of smell molecules including functional groups and shape. Next, students use this knowledge to explore the connection between smell and disease.
